Future dentists can earn their Doctors of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) from the University of Washington School of Dentistry which is comprised of ten different departments ranging from pediatric dentistry to dental public health services. Advanced dental students will find short-term workshops and seminars designed to develop Mastery level skills in a variety of disciplines, including diagnostic, treatment planning and case presentation at the Seattle Institute for Advanced Dental Education. For dental hygiene students, Shoreline Community College in Seattle has an associate of applied sciences degree program. An associate degree program also is available at Pierce College in Lakewood, and an AAS dental hygienist program is offered by Lake Washington Technical College in Kirkland. Seattle dental students who want to jump start their career should consider the dental assistant program offered by the Dental Assistant Training Center a 10-week program with an average student-to-instructor ratio of four-to-one. Students interested in earning a dental assistant certificate can also chose from Pima Medical Institute located in Seattle or suburban Renton. Two Bryman College campuses in the metro Seattle area, in Renton and Everett, also offer dental assistant certificates.
Graduates of dental programs who want to stay in the Seattle area will find their expertise in demand. The Washington Employment Security Department forecasts growth in the number of job openings for dental assistants, dental hygienists and practitioners of general dentistry. Jobs for assistants and hygienists are projected to grow by an average of 2.3% annually from 2005 through 2010, an increase of 1,179 and 804 openings respectively. The Seattle area is also expected to see annual growth of 1.3% in the number of jobs for general dentistry practitioners during the same period, from a total of 2,158 dentists in 2005 to 2,305 by the year 2010. Currently, Seattle-area dentists earn more than $122,000 per year, dental hygienists average more than $79,000 and dental assistants average more than $35,000, reports the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics
